#1 Diaper Pail Deodorizer – Flush the Poop

We did cloth diapers for a few years. While we’re back on disposables now. I learned a valuable lesson.

Any solid poop should go into the toilet and get flushed. This alone will make a dramatic cut in the stink factor. Quickly making a big dent in your stinky diaper pail smell.

Think about it – when did we decide it was best to throw poop in the trash can. And then think it wouldn’t stink up the house??

If the poop is messy and not easily dumpable, wrap up the diaper in a bag and set it outside your house.

They should never go in the diaper pail. You’ll be fighting an uphill battle.

Getting rid of the smell from it’s source will make a huge difference in your diaper pail deodorizer efforts.

You could even put a cute little trashcan outside your door to put the stinky diapers in.

#2 Diaper Pail Deodorizer – Use a trashcan with a lid

We used many diaper pails over the years.

What I found worked best was a regular trashcan with a lid. I found one like this . Just step on the lever and the trash can opens.

So convenient when you’re changing a diaper with a wiggly little one or get your hands dirty.

Or you can get fancy and get a trash can that is motion activated. How cool is that when you’re up to your eyeballs in stinky diapers?

Made diaper changes much easier. It’s like having an extra hand. And we all need one of those right?!

A lid on your stinky diaper pail will help seal in those smells to keep the room smelling fresh.

And ALWAYS use a bag to line your trash can/diaper pail. Don’t throw dirty diapers in an empty trashcan.

#3 Diaper Pail Deodorizer – Baking Soda

Baking soda is a staple in our home for cleaning. I use it all the time. We buy it by the case.

For good reason, it’s amazing stuff.

It absorbs odors like nobody’s business! This is my FAVORITE diaper pail deodorizer. Unlike the trash can that traps odors in, baking soda eliminates them so there is less odor to trap in the can.

I like to mix some essential oils to the baking soda and sprinkle some over the dirty diapers. My favorites are blends – Purify and Cleaning from Edens Garden.

You can sprinkle some at the bottom of the diaper pail every week or so to remove odors. It is a great preventative measure to avoid the stinky diaper pail smell.

I use a recycled grated cheese jar for easy sprinkling. It works great. It also doubles as my stainless steel kitchen sink cleaner..

Add your baking soda and essential oils and give it a good shake. Store it next to the diaper pail and use as needed to freshen the diaper pail.

I also use baking soda and essential oils to keep my stainless steel sink shiny and clean.

#4 Diaper Pail Deodorizer -Vinegar to the rescue

Vinegar is great at killing odors. Making it one of the best diaper pail deodorizers.

I do occasionally sprinkle baking soda at the bottom of the diaper pail. But more often I spray it out with vinegar.

Just spray the diaper pail with vinegar and let it air dry before adding a new bag.

If it’s a sunny day, I’ll spray it with vinegar and let it sit out in the sunshine to dry. The sun will kill loads of odor causing bacteria – double score!

To give a pleasant scent and a little extra deodorizing boost I add essential oils to the spray.

#5 Diaper Pail Deodorizer – Take out the Trash Regularly

Don’t wait a week or more to take out the trash. If you do that in your kitchen, you’re sure to get some stink.

Same goes for the diaper pail.

Aim to empty it every 3-4 days. The more often the better.

We used a small trashcan for diapers, which forced me to change the bag more often.

Bonus: Bathroom Air Freshener/Deodorizing Spray

In our house we have big kid smells and little kid smells.

While I still have 1 left in diapers, but the rest of the kids can stink up the bathroom.

We use a DIY bathroom deodorizing spray like PooPouri. Spray the water before you go, and it cuts down on smells big time!!!

My kids call it the Poop Spray. And they use it because they know it works!

I use it in more than the bathroom though.

When my little guy who’s still in diapers does his business in his bedroom. It stinks up the whole area.

I spray the room, no more smell.
